Mazon river / Monster lake, link. Pennsylvanian Period. “Mazon creek around monster lake and found a lot of fossils. If you park where the lake is and go down the gravel road a bit there should be a chained up gravel road and the sign there should say fossil hunting. Make sure you go down the gravel road because there is another trail in the parking lot but that is the wrong one, or at least that’s the wrong one for what I’m talking about. The area is for public access. Once you get around the rope keep going down the trail and then there should be these orange looking rocks. This area is a shale. If you keep going through the brush there should be a big shale area.” Also, Mazonia-Braidwood State Fish and Wildlife Area.
